Division of Veterinary Diagnostics and Research

The Division of Veterinary Diagnostics and Research provides diagnostic and advisory services for infectious diseases in livestock, focusing mainly on pigs, cattle and poultry. Our diagnostic and advisory services cover primarily notifiable diseases, but also some endemic diseases are included, e.g by serological or other fast diagnostics methods. The research activities in the division form the basis, both for the diagnostics and advisory services, but also for education and innovation.

The department supplies data for monitoring animal diseases in Denmark. This service covers animal diseases subject to national and international legislation.

Research objectives include:

  • the development and optimisation of reliable, fast and cost-effective diagnostic methods
  • achieving a better understanding of the nature of the respective diseases (pathogenesis) and the host response to infection (immunology)
  • achieving a better understanding of the incidence and spread of diseases in the livestock production sector (epidemiology)
  • developing vaccines and sera on the basis of research findings (vaccinology).

The division consist of five research groups:

  • Microbial Ecology
  • Innate Immunology
  • Virology
  • Adaptive Immunology and Parasitology
  • Bacteriology and Pathology

and two sections:
